41) Turtle Island

Ich bin jetzt schon gespannt, was mich dort erwartet.

So, I was on my own again. Late in the evening I arrived in Kota Kinabalu in my "cozy hostel". A really nice place with nice people. Although I had only 3 hours, in this short time philosophical talks with William from America ... but currently living in Hong Kong. Coincidentally he will be in Sepilok in the next few days and probably I will meet him there after my Turtle Island trip.

Early the next day my flight was to Sandakan, where I checked in to the Four Points Sheraton. I sat comfortably in my hotel room with a great view of the sea and enjoyed editing my photos and starting update the blog of the last weeks..

The next morning the meeting point was at the boat station of "Christal Quest Tours". From the hotel room it looked very close ... but with backpack and in the heat the walk felt like an eternity. Fully sweaty, I let myself register for the tour.

The drive to the 40 km distant island enabled us to take a look at the stilts-houses. Once again I was shocked by the amount of plastic garbage floating in the sea.

In the middle of the sea the engine suddenly stopped. The guide tried to calm us down and said it was just the propeller .... WAAAATH? In the middle of the sea.

Fortunately, the journey continued and soon we reached the island similar to Robinson Crusoe's. You do not even need an hour around the island ...

During the day we had time to enjoy nature, snorkeling and wildlife. So we watched the fish and later I was captivated by the sight of two small birds that had flown out of the nest too early and were now being fed by their parents in the bush and on the ground.

After dinner we had to wait for the turtle alarm. Soon all 39 people followed the ranger and we disturbed a turtle laying eggs. The green turtle was surveyed and it turned out that she laid eggs on the island for the first time.

Later we went to the nests ... the eggs of the turtles, which lay their eggs here, are collected and then placed in sandy hatcherys. Here, the miniature turtles can be safe and once they hatch, they are released by the rangers on the beach.

That too we were allowed to observe. You could hardly see anything with so many people ... but the ranger said, we should be lucky ... from 40 people, the group will be divided and we are 39! Haaapy???

Nevertheless, it was very interesting to observe this process.

A really great island and I was almost sad to leave. Also our group was great. We had some great talks. It turned out that Alex and Robyn also had to go to Sepilok so I could share a taxi with them.

I'm curious to see what awaits me there.
