11) Kratie

The 7 hour bus ride to Kratie was more pleasant than expected. Nevertheless I was quite tired when I arrived in Kratie. Then I had to take the ferry to the island where I will stay for the next 3 nights. Arrived there I was a little bit surprised about the accommodation... not quite as described in the internet... but the family of the homestay was really very nice. On the first evening I helped the mother to cook, well... I didn't do much, but she was still happy about the help.  The dinner was really delicious!

The next day I had arranged with the son of the homestay that he would organize a tour to the dolphins for me. That he would drive me around by himself, I had not thought.  The pagoda he took me to first was a real insider tip. Very nice. You climbed the highest "mountain" in the area and had a great view. Thanks to butterflies, dragonflies and monkeys our stay in Wat Phnom Sambok was a bit extended.

After this stop my guide found joy in letting me try and pay a lot. Rice stick, snails and later it should be palmjuice.

But first the observation of the fresh water dolphins was on the program. That was very relaxing. Even though the dolphins were very timid it was a great experience!

After this nature experience it was time to try Palmjuice.

We drove off and he said... ...it was just around the corner from the city. We drove and drove and slowly the suspicion crept into my mind that "Would you like to try Palmjuice" is a synonym for "I'll drive with you to the pampas and leave you there alone! PHU...but no...after a felt hour we reached a wooden platform on which a family was sitting. The father was just up in the palm tree to get the juice and so nothing stood in the way of enjoying it. It was delicious... chilled it would have been even better. And yes... it was HOT! 38° and so I got my first sunburn at the end of the beautiful day.

Unfortunately the homestay had no real shower and also no air conditioning, so the heat was a real torture. But I survived the night sweaty and the next day I went for a bike tour around the island. So I cycled past friendly smiling and HELLO calling people... the kids always wanted to know my name. They learn that at school. But beyond this sentence no communication was possible.

Around the island there are sandy beaches and fishing boats. It's a nice, quiet, relaxing area.

This island life was a stark contrast to the city of Phnom Penh, but exactly what I had been looking for.
